About ILRG
History and Accomplishments

The Island Lakes Residents' Group (ILRG) was formed in 1989 to address the concerns of the residents in regards to the developer and the City of Winnipeg, and to be the liaison between both parties, along with our provincial and federal governments.  Our board of volunteers continues to contribute many hours of their own personal time working on many different initiatives and issues for the benefit of the whole community. Over the years, our group has been recognized and honoured for our many accomplishments to date, which include the following:

-Island Lakes Community School - Your ILRG spent many years working with the St. Boniface School Division, Dept. of Education, our MLA - Mr. Jack Reimer, City of Winnipeg, our former councilor - Mr Dan Vandal and our former councilor Evelyn Reese to secure the school for our community along with the community use facilities and the attached day care facilities.

-Development of Waterfront Park - in concert with the City of Winnipeg. This includes pathways, lighting, park benches, garbage receptacles, trees, bollard fencing, parking area, play structure and swing set. This was completed at a cost of approximately $100,000. We were able to raise our share of $50,000 through grants and our annual membership drive. The play structure in this park cost approximately $35K in 1993.

-Development of Seigneurie Park - also in concert with the City of Winnipeg which includes a play structure, trees, walkway, benches, and a toboggan hill. Here again, this was made possible through a grant and also our own funds from our annual membership drive.

-Island Shore Park - as a result of working with the City of Winnipeg we ere able to add the soccer posts, baseball diamond and backstop, along with additional trees.

-Lindsey Wilson Park - between Boiselle Bay and the Island Lakes Community School where development of this park is still ongoing. The planning and development of this park has been ongoing for the last several years, with ILRG, City of Wpg, Novamet and our residents. In 1995, in co-operation with the City of Wpg, Parks and Rec. Dept, we conducted a residents' survey to obtain community input as to the amenities which were desired.  In view of all three other parks being children focused, the desire was to have a less "child" focused park area. As a result, we are now enjoying enjoying basketball courts, tennis court and will soon have a baseball diamond, walkways with a "back to nature" theme as in wild grasses and many smaller trees throughout the drainage swails, which in future will attract birds and smaller wildlife. Total cost of the amentities to the park, including landscaping, sod, etc. is in the $400,000 range (once completed). These initiatives have been achieved through the efforts of the ILRG, Novamet, City of Winnipeg, and grants, along with funds from our own resources, which largely come from our annual membership drive which is our major fundraising source.

-Development of the ILRG Newsletter - Printing costs are in the $700-$800 range and rising as the number of houses increases. Each and every home in our development receives a copy through their block captain. If you are not receiving a copy, please contact our Vice-Chairperson. Cost of printing is subsidized by advertising, with the remainder from our memberships.

-Green Team - Last summer was the eleventh consecutive year that we have participated in the Green Team program. This is a program which employs students between the ages of 16-24. Through this program, we are able to provide enhanced maintenance for our community throughout the summer months.

-Christmas Lighting Contest - was held for six years with prizes being awarded for the best Christmas lights. Prizes were provided by business sponsors in our community.

-Annual Spring Cleanup and BBQ - was the eleventh year this event has been held.

-Berm sodding along CPR Emerson line - Your ILRG was successful in getting reimbursement for sod for each individual homeowner along the berm.

-Wayfarers/Camirant/Black Pearl shoreline enhancement

-Annual Garage Sale - September 2004 was the seventh annual garage sale.
