Your Lake-Side Trees are in Danger!!
The beavers are back and knawing their way through lake-side trees. I lost two this month (I also lost one last year). One would think I would take my own advice to protect my trees.
Weed Harvester still working on our lakes
The city has finally put the weed harvester into our lakes to clean it out. Certainly none too soon as I had to wade into the lake to save a young duck from drowning that was tangled in the weeds!
After a call to 311, the city has now advised that they have spread herbicide in the northeastern lake as the lake is too shallow to accomodate the harvester. If you use the lake to water any plants it is strongly advised that you don't as you never know when the city will be using herbicides.
The ILRG board welcomes your input!
In consultation with our community residents, our board will be focusing its efforts on the following initiatives:
  • solar lighting in Lindsey Wilson Park
  • pergola/gazebo
  • community entrance sign
Do you have any ideas for future projects? If so, please email info@islandlakes.org
About Island Lakes
Island Lakes is located in South East Winnipeg, at the corner of Bishop Grandin and Lagimodiere. It provides easy access to major crosstown routes and is only a few minutes from St. Vital Centre. This development began in 1985 when Novamet Development Corp. developed the 580-acre Island Lakes subdivision, which today has about 2,500 homes.
The elementary school opened in the fall of 2001. Adjacent to the school is a 16-acre park with tennis courts, basketball hoops and baseball diamonds. The neighborhood's lakeside walkways have always been a popular feature for joggers, cyclists and strollers, and the lakes are always popular with canoeists. For lovers of nature and birdwatchers, the community has a five-acre natural grass area planted with native prairie species. Enjoy our parks with playground equipment, baseball diamonds and large green areas for fun.
